Alright, you’re back from your holiday, more likely back at W (yea we never say the W word here), and you are trying to wrap your head around the events you absolutely can’t miss this summer in Perth.
If you’ve not been in Perth long, you may find that cutting through the clutter of restaurant “events”, farmer’s markets, and kids’ workshops is rather time-consuming on the usual event listing. For example, just for one Saturday, there are 284 entries on Perth Discovery. Well, the good news is…I’ve cut through the noise and put together a curated selection just for you.
Symphony Orchestra Concert Under the Stars
I mean, not everyone is into listening to classical music, but we can all agree that there is something moving about film music and experiencing a live orchestra. Cherry on top: this concert is at Perth Observatory, so instead of being in a traditional theater enclosed room, we’re talking bean bags and picnics with as a backdrop to one of the natural wonders of the Southern Hemisphere….the majestic night sky.
Yes, because if you didn’t know, we see a lot more stars being down under, and even more in the Perth Hills. In terms of the programme, it has nothing elitist, with “music from games and iconic films,” with a mention of “Sci-Fi,” so we can hope Interstellar is on the list. I meant that would be perfect for the location.
It’s happening on Saturday, Feb 28. Check the Perth Observatory website page for more info and to book your ticket.
Comedy Stand Up Shows That Click
It’s not the first thing that comes to mind for a night out, and one of the highlights of Fringe festivals is the array of stand-up comedy to choose from. But fear not, I did promise I’d cut through the daunting 604 shows listed. Did I look into all of them? Of course not. But I have my filtering system, so here’s what made the cut:
5 Headliners for $25
Efficient, clean, cheap, plus they claim “no picking on the audience”… well that’s a no brainer. There are also a lot of dates available for shows in the evening, from Jan 21 to Feb 15, with over 40 sessions. More info and booking here.
A History Comedy Show
This is a quirky idea, and with the variety of historical characters they embody, I am sure there is something for everyone. Oh, and it won an award, so this is a safe option. And who doesn’t want a stand-up show from Gandhi, Ned Kelly, or Adolf Hitler?
From Feb 21 to Mar 22, with 9 sessions to choose from. More info and booking here.
A Death By Powerpoint – Comedy Show.
It seems that this goes beyond making fun of the corporate world, and although there is little information, I think this is a concept worth taking a punt on.
From Jan 23 to Feb 6, with 5 sessions to choose from. More info and booking here.
And to my Fringe and comedy stand-up savvy readers please leave a comment with your show selection.
Immersive Music and Light Show for an Outer Body Experience
This one’s a bit more niche, but I guess it’ll appeal if you are open to new experiences and don’t mind electronic music. Two events:
Max Coper at East Perth Power Station.
Compared to Jackson Pollock in the event description (a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement), this show blends electronic music with visuals. And the big bonus is that is it is on the main stage of Perth Festival’s iconic location, East Perth Power Station. You can have a taster of the show with Max Cooper’s previous performance in Athens here where you can also book tickets for Friday, Feb 6.
K Mak at the Planetarium
I went last year and can personally vouch for it. Again, you need to not mind electronic music but this one has live cello and violin to sweeten things up. It’s selling fast with only 4 sessions left as I am writing (Saturday, Jan 31 and Sunday, Feb 1), so no time to lose, go here to check it out and book your ticket.
Free Outdoor Concerts That are Worth It
Again, I am not throwing just the event series at you; I am picking the shows. This enticed me to watch past shows and listen to the latest songs. Yup, taking this seriously!
Selve at East Perth Power Station.
High energy Rock indie…tick. Really cool venue…tick. Free…tick. This concert is on the Casa Music free event series as part of Perth Festival on the outdoor scene at East Perth Power Station. I checked the music and this is gooood. It’s happening Friday, Feb 6. More info here.
Conrad Sewel at Ryrie Reserve, Como.
A big headliner (we’re talking touring with Ed Sheeran, playing at Coachella) in a beautiful riverside setting, because yes, if you read this far, you now know we love a good surrounding. I had a hard time finding how Conrad’s style is described in short, so here’s the best I could find: “soul-inflected pop.” Supporting act is Indie Rock, and tickets… well, are free! It’s on Saturday, Feb 21. More info here.
So there you have it, a hand-picked selection of Perth’s events this summer. The Perth Festival is definitely worth a browse, and honestly, I think just going to East Perth Power Station for the location with the light show and food trucks is worth it. And if you end up discovering a hidden gem I’ve missed, drop a comment (if that’s still a thing in 2025), I’d love to hear about it!
