As the Bunuru season comes to an end, it’s time to plan ahead for things to do and see this April. While the weather is not so certain anymore, with some light rain and overcast days lurking, this selection of events makes sure you’ve got something for each weekend. As usual, hand-picked with complete subjectivity.
Fremantle Street Art festival
Fremantle | Easter weekend | Free
“Unleash your unusual” with the Fremantle Street Arts Festival. Due to its nature, you can easily just rock up whenever you feel like it and wander the streets to catch one of the many performances. Most shows run twice a day, every day of the festival.
World Champion Acrobat
What not to miss? The Cho Kairin Super Acrobat Team seems to be a major highlight. These multi-medalist world champion acrobats showcase their mastery of Chinese acrobatics. You can check their performance times here.
Aerial Dance
Natural Wings also stands out, blending aerial dance with humour and storytelling. Only one show per day, so it’s worth checking the timetable in advance.
Electro Swing Concert
On the music side, Formidable Vegetable caught my attention with their fun electro-swing style. As the name suggests, they make songs about gardening, waste and ecology, without compromising on quality or entertainment. For a sneak peek, check out No Such Thing As Waste on Youtube. They’re playing at 6pm on Saturday at the National Hotel Pitch.
The Ultimate Show
For the main event, the Night Show brings together seven performances, including the Chinese acrobat team, for a full-on spectacle at 7:30pm on Sunday night at Sail & Anchor Pitch.
Lotterywest Boorloo Heritage Festival
Multiple venues | 1 – 30 April | Mainly free (some ticketed events)
A festival celebrating the heritage of Boorloo (Perth) through a wide range of tours and walks. While some of the program can feel a bit niche, there is a “weekend highlight” in the program (download here) that is worth scanning through.
My pick is for my artsy friends: an adult workshop on the 19th and 26th of April with award-winning Noongar artist Fiona Reidy. You’ll create a painting inspired by native Australian animals in an Aboriginal art style. Tickets available here (select Boorloo Heritage Festival in the experience menu).
Perth Italian Festival
Langley Park | Saturday 11 April | Free
The third edition of this festival has everything you’d expect: Italian cars, food, drinks, music and dance. I will warn you about the food queues (last year I waited about 45 minutes), but it can make for a great night out, with fireworks and a DJ to close things off.
Running from 11am to 10:30pm at Langley Park. The Facebook page here has a little more info than the official website.
Perth Indonesian Festival
Forrest Place | Saturday 18 April | Free
Located in the heart of Perth CBD, this event – similar to the Italian Festival – celebrates Indonesian culture through food, music and performances. A nice daytime option if you’re around the city and want something lively and different. There is not much more information unfortunately, just a few lines here.
Perth Comedy Festival
Multiple venues | 20 April – 17 May | Ticketed
The easiest pick here is the Gala, running across three nights from the 29th of April. I do like when you get to see multiple comedians in one show without having to dig through the full program.
If you’re keen to explore more multi-comedians show, there are also themed nights like the All-Scottish lineup, an Aboriginal All Star and the “Best of the Fest International”, again packing la creme de la creme in one show.
Music for All Tastes
If you’re into alt-pop rock, Machine Gun Kelly is at RAC Arena for the Lost Americana Tour on Saturday 8 April.
Electronic Island is back at Cottesloe Beach on Sunday 19 April.
For the metal and punk crowd, A Day To Remember & Papa Roach are stopping by Perth on Saturday 4 April.
Still On in April
Pink Floyd Immersive Experience, Final Date
Perth Planetarium | 18 April | Ticketed
If you haven’t read last month’s selection and you’re into Pink Floyd, the Perth Planetarium is hosting its final visual show celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon. Tickets here.
Last Weeks of the French Film Festival
Multiple venues | Until 15 April | Ticketed
Again if you missed last month’s blog, the French Film Festival is still running. In short, my picks are Guru with our beloved Pierre Niney, and two comedies: Class Reunion and The Rookie Guide.
